Lee Kemp – Ultra Runner

I have only concentrated on Ultra running for the last two years but have always loved taking part in sport, growing up this was mostly football, hockey and basketball. After giving up football in my early twenties I was looking for something else to keep me fit. Friends of mine persuaded me to enter a local 10k race. To be honest, my first experience was not the best. In fact, I absolutely hated it and didn’t want to do another, ever!

My friends persevered with me and persuaded me to give it another try but this time a trail event as opposed to the race I had done which had been around the aerodrome where Top Gear is filmed.

Trail running was a totally different experience! I absolutely loved it! Discovering trail running made me passionate about running and enabled me to satisfy my desire for being outdoors. Since then I have completed many trail races of varying distance and was even part of the Runner’s World Magazine World Record breaking team who travelled the furthest distance on a treadmill in 48 hours.

In the last two years I have focused on Ultra marathons after being persuaded to “give it a proper go” by two good friends of mine after finishing 10th in my first 100k mountain ultra in Poland.

At my first attempt at the British Ultra Trail marathon championships I came 1st in a course record time at the Hoka Highland Fling 53 mile event and was selected to run for Great Britain at the World Trail Championships – unfortunately injury put pay to running in this event which was a huge disappointment and I hope not the last time I will get selected to represent my country.

Since then notable race results include:

  • 5th British Ultra Trail Championships – Lakeland 50

  • 11th The North Face CCC 100km Mountain Ultra (first Brit)

  • 2nd UK Skyrunning 3x3000m Ultramarathon 80Km

  • 1st, White Cliffs 80km Ultra (Course Record)

  • 1st, British Ultra Trail Championships - Hoka Highland Fling 53 Mile Trail Ultra (Course Record)

  • 1st, Brecon Beacons Ultra (Course Record)
